EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
