Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
